"you’re made of (angel) and (space) dust "
Sleepy Gonzales is one of those indie alternative bands that have that bedroom pop sort of sound, a kind of sound you want all to yourself but then you want them to get big and be on SNL one day, but not so big that they change. Their latest offering from Light Organ Records is called Slow Apocalypse. It is a stirring of sounds, hazy reflections, with guitar sustains, droning synths as a frame for their girl boy, boy girl vox. Thankfully they drop the big wash when the verses rain and I like being able to hear their poetry. The drum pattern is rad and the stops in between are radder. (yeah, sorry I still say rad...) It is funny or sad, or funny sad that so many songs are mining the end times and whether it is metaphorical or actual imaginings, it comes around again and again over different generations.
Sleepy Gonzales' sound is, at heart, deeply sad as in "life is sad" but it also feels like a mirror, a starting or ending point to look at yourself and the world and then do whatever. Educate yourself, get political or not. In the end music is either an inspiration, escapist fair, or a sort of personal soundtrack. I think SG's music makes us all feel and think, and I really like that apart from all the rad sounds (ha). They also pen some amazing lyrics that, delivered in their sort of aloof sad tone, can be very powerful and beautiful at the same time.
you’re made of (angel) and (space) dust //
you’re the only kind of smoke i ever want inside my lungs //
it’s a riot // police car side-flip //
burning in the streets in a Molotov fire pit //
yeah we can dance in the orange glow //
until the military comes forcing everyone to go home //
but if i know us // we’re gonna find a rooftop //
put the city underneath us //
we’ll stay on top of this slow apocalypse //

THE FACTS AS WE KNOW THEM - PRESS NOTES:
Sleepy Gonzales is an Indie band from a tiny basement in Surrey onto stages around Vancouver. Their sound could be described as suburban sadness drenched in reverb. Or dreamlike melodies backed by raw, tired energy.
