"I've been foolish but damned if I'm blind"
Derbyshire, a county in the East Midlands of England is known as the birthplace of the Rolls Royce but now I will think of that region of the world as where Sophie Kilburn was born. This is because the fluid, beautiful sound of her voice spun in her melodies will be bouncing in my head for a long time and remnants of Call Home may never leave. Maybe it will never leave because the singer-songwriter (and full time coffee addict) has the ability to move her voice in such emotional ways. Against the alt-rock guitar picking, she reaches down low but turns it up into falsettos that in and of themselves have different tones from pure to tinged with anxious ropes of dissonance. It is also the fact that I never call those who I need to for assurance, or to tell them I love them enough. It is a tough cross I have to bear and now this bittersweet reminder has a beautiful melancholy soundtrack. Kilburn's tough and lovely Call Home is about carrying a false face, eating one's own pain when some sort of relief could be, might be just a call away.
