"I'll have myself a dandy little day"
As I revel in the western swing of Bad Flamingo's Dandy Little Day hanging on that guitar note jutting out, dang dang dang, the delicious heavy bass sauntering around and BF's vocal signature sound that lives in that place where empowered women have worn weathered yet beautiful voices, exude danger with romance and wear fucking masks I am wondering why this interesting duo is probably the most posted about art outfit on American Pancake (?) It is undoubtedly, their songwriting, the strong performance art aspect... I am after all a Bowie aficionado squared. It is the mask thing too and their well planned desire to stay a bit of a mystery that is alluring... but I think what I like the most is the take craft and care implicit in their sound, their persona and the timing of it all.
Here I listen to waaay too much music. While I occasionally have some helpers listening to submissions, it is mostly me and often times artists are jumping on trains - (cue the Cure's 1979 Jumping Someone Else's Train). Artist's unknowingly sound like Billie Eilish or Tame Impala or are borrowing too many iconic riffs from the Pixies, or Lou Reed or pick your favorite. Bad Flamingo do borrow or rather are inspired by a certain genres and to me they are like a car crash of vintage Frankie Lane meets Blood On The Saddle meets Nancy Sinatra meets The Gun Club but NOT. They are their own thing at a time when many artists are not. A unique sound and persona and that is why I eat up their western noir pop punk sound with a steak knife.
