"enjoy it now before it's too late, what an actress"
The Balloon Mistook For A Man by Mesa, Arizona punkers JJCnV and from their seven track EP "Stays Up Late" is a punk pounder. I thought immediately of bands like L.A. punk icons X and the Stooges as well. The chunky guitars, tom tom feral drums, and sort of bull crack whip guitar provide a potent train for bass player Pete Hinz's discordant wails. When the drunken sax comes in, a perfect coupling with the weird, curious lyrics, I flashed on Liliput, X-Ray Spex and the Stranglers. This feels so fresh. Punk or art punk or whatever you want to call it, JJCnV are needed right now.

THE FACTS AS WE KNOW THEM - PRESS NOTES:
JJCnV combines the talents of Dana Stern (vocals, guitar), Pete Hinz (vocals, bass), and Jeff Barthold (drums, vocals). This art punk act from Phoenix is known for their sardonic wit, ruckus energy, and a hard to pin down genre. Their sound has been described by the press as everything from alternative to pop punk to indie rock to just straight “orgiastic” [JAVA Magazine].
Songwriting and lead vocal duties are divided between the husband-wife duo of Dana and Pete, but really, it’s drummer Jeff Barthold and his love of pickles that has held the band together for well over a decade.
Fans and music journalists often wonder what the letters in JJCnV stand for after a cease-and-desist letter stripped away the original meaning when the trio first formed in 2005. Everything from “Juggling Juicy Coconuts Never Vexes” to “Jellied Japanese Cockroach Nipple Vaseline” and “Jay-Jay Sea Envy” has been put forth, but you get to decide for yourself what the acronym stands for, according to the band.
JJCnV’s unique style has been described as a "nebulous" amalgamation of genres and their offbeat sense of humor has invited comparisons by the press to bands like the Pixies and Dead Milkmen. They’ve shared the stage with a variety of bands, including Melt Banana, Big Eyes, Deaf Wish, Jucifer, NoBunny, and Lenguas Largas.
Stays Up Late, the new EP from JJCnV, is set for release on May 8th.
