"I love my brothers, let's trust each other"
Denmark based Reveal Party is an indie rock / alt pop band / declaration and at it's core is front trans woman, Emily Holm Nyhuus, singer-songwriter, musician and their latest offering, I Love My Brothers, from their soon to be released EP "You Stole A Year Of My Life" (dropping July 21, 2020), is a powerful song pushing emotions in interesting ways. It is a short song but one that is, in the end, a glorious ascension, anthemic and deep. At first nuanced upfront acoustic guitars and Nyhuus's intimate vox grace us but very soon waves of synth, other guitars and droning sounds fill the spaces creating an enormous sound within this sort of small framework. Nyhuus sings about trust, about healing, about distant fathers, about silent mothers and about the love of family, not necessarily biological families but those who simply love and accept you.
Reveal Party says:
"I Love My Brothers is a love letter to men, wholesome masculinity, untraditional masculinity, vulnerability, solidarity and love."
With the song and the Official Video produced while in quarantine, Reveal Party challenges what is masculine and, in my mind, what is feminine. The band makes me think of actual gender "reveal parties" that couples have and how antiquated the "blue" / "pink" motif is but I digress.
On the band's Facebook, Nyhuus offers a clear statement on what informs the song:
"As a trans woman I obviously felt quite trapped in masculinity. I write all the time about this feeling and what specific aspects of masculinity made me feel that way. There seems to be this broader cultural movement of wholesome masculinity and redefining manhood, I see these men all around me everyday who handle masculinity beautifully, these men I appreciate so much, I wanted to celebrate them.
I wanted to celebrate letting men be vulnerable, letting men cry, letting ALL men be feminine (cis and trans), celebrating trans men who are so often not included when trans people are discussed in the mainstream, but who I see as absolutely essential and frontrunners in this cultural movement of wholesome masculinity."
Loving this song and want a longer version. I am greedy that way.
Reveal Party is comprised of: Emily Holm Nyhuus (Vocal, Guitar, Keys, Production, Songwriting), Marius Svejdal Bertelsen (Guitar, Drums, Production), Erika Lindstrøm Jensen (Bass) and Oscar Emil Momberg-Jørgensen (Guitar).
