"Lift this rag ‘round my temple, I wanna let in the light"
Snacks Chapman, it sounds like one of those contrived character names on "Happy Days", Fonzie to Ritchie, "Aaaay, this is my friend Snacks Chapman" but it is not, it is the name of a Brooklyn based, self described garage / grunge band. Their track Surprise caught my ear and then hung on, clawing at me and while I am feeling more art rock affections than grunge, I definitely find their sound engaging. It has a fair amount of post punk punch and interesting weirdness in the choppy guitars and sort of bipolar melodies. There is something glammy here too, buried beneath the surface in, at least, this song. It is pulp fiction-eey too, divergent and dangerous. There is a lot to like here.
From the band:
"Surprise" follows the journey of a headstrong prisoner and their deceitful captor. The game: "escape". Good and evil meet face to face and the pursuit for freedom ensues. Timeless in its nature, classic in its depiction, and topical on many levels, we hope this track gives the cathartic release pissed listeners need right now.
