"I've never felt like this before"
Brooklyn based alt rock Demeter on their powerful and devastating track Joanie tells a true, all to common, story about spousal abuse and eventual murder. The song constructed like a three act play and built on a sinewy, tense rock build up and Kate Rivera's words as the three distinct voices, the abuser ("I know I hit that pretty head... don't be mad let's go to bed"), the support system ("That badge he's got fills me with fear), and finally the victim ("but if I... where will I go) is immensely dark. The ratcheting tension made denser with the weight of the words, at times, feels almost emotionally unbearable especially in the light of this song being a memorial "for a family member, the wife of a police officer that was shot and murdered by her husband". As "the victim" contemplates her own death, guitar layers, crescendo strikes of drums, and bass wrap around the sadness. Bending lead guitar lines, plaintive electric wails rain down like tears.
Demeter is comprised of singer-songwriter, guitarist Kate Rivera, guitarist Ian McNally, drummer John Mason, bassist Daniel Bloch, and keyboardist, vocalist Tim Bustle. "Joanie" is from the band's debut EP "The Year of Goodbye" out now.
