"all before the color's gone"
Experience JONES' official video for her effusively effervescent single Camera Flash and you will be both taken aback and taken back. JONES' vocal aesthetic is earthy and real, shunning diva pretense, but instead infusing the retro dance track with proto pop affections. The production, the song (in construction and tone) is cross generational, there is the dicey sultry edges of 70's Bowie-esque funk wave, there are touches of mid 80's Black Box-ian house as well as a slap groove sense of mid 2000's Chicano disco funk in that Los Charly's Orchestra flavor. The hybrid nature makes sense because JONES' (aka Cherie Jones-Mattis) vocal aesthetic a multi-coloration, hybrid exploration of soul, disco, funk, R&B and that other indefinable sound that you place proto in front of.
