Dublin's Pillow Queens continue to amaze with their latest track Holy Show and a seriously cinematic Official Video accompanying the song by Video director Kate Dolan who worked with the band on the vid for "Handsome Wife". While the band likes to push back descriptors (like punk or pop) I can't help but feel a lovely, earnest blue collar Americana rock vibe cemented with a 60's torture pop tone. I know I have brought this up before with Pillow Queens, their propensity to dive into nostalgic flavors (even though there is a post punk wash). I thought of the Cranberries here too. The vox are so exquisitely lovely and filled with a crushing longing as are the lyrics:
"I'm still a baby / If you're still waiting outside / I've got your eyes and cheeks in front of me / Filling the space between my thighs / I'll roll you up and crack you open / We look like a couple of teens / Just hanging back and holy ghosting / Apologize and leave"
Apart from the breath and scope of the song that feels, in and of itself so cinematic, we live in a world were the dark hearts among us might fill with hate at the sight of queer love. For those like myself where that kind of feeling is inexplicable, we must all be reminded that there are parts of the world and maybe even parts or your and my town where it still isn't completely safe for members of the LGBT to be utterly themselves in public. The video offers a beautiful counterpoint.
The band explains: “Holy Show is a song that relays the feeling of regret and insecurity about past words spoken and actions taken, even when they’re ultimately meaningless. The song tries to articulate the heavy burden of being the only person who is concerned about the minute details of how you present yourself to the world.” Video director Kate Dolan continues: "Myself and the girls are all queer so when they asked me to direct something for Holy Show we all felt it was time that we made a video that had some positive queer representation. There are often depictions of queer women in the media that really upset me. We are often observed through a male gaze by male directors. They are often hyper sexualised. We wanted to create something that really captured the joyful intimacy between queer women through a female gaze."
Pillow Queens push boundaries leaving timeless songs in their wake and are Pamela Connolly (Vocals, guitar, bass), Sarah Corcoran (Vocals, guitar, bass), Rachel Lyons (Drums, vocals) and Cathy McGuinness (Lead guitar, vocals).

Events currently taking place throughout the world only serve to stoke a fire under the likes of Pillow Queens, who find themselves continually inspired by a Dublin that is no stranger to fighting social injustice. Street artists, fashion designers, musicians, film makers and more comprise a scene which routinely champions queerness and marginalized groups, and engages with and activates young people in response to the likes of the city’s ongoing housing and mental health crises. Pillow Queens’ songs of togetherness and unity ring out louder than ever before.
In their short lifespan as a band they've released two demo EPs, performed on a successful string of UK & Irish dates & festival appearances, had playlisting from BBC 6 Music, and found themselves opening for the likes of American Football and Pussy Riot, as well as stadium performances opening for IDLES and Future Islands.
With all this under their belt, the band began working with Mercury Prize nominated producer Tommy McLaughlin for their single 'Gay Girls' – which received a nomination for the RTE Choice Music Prize song of the year, as well as International pickup from NPR’s World Cafe and KEXP. The song also found its way into the heart of actor Cillian Murphy and his BBC6 mixtape show.
2019 saw Pillow Queens venture into mainland Europe, as they lit up the Eurosonic festival and completed a string of tour dates opening for Soak. The tour was a messy and joyous affair captured beautifully in the DIY video for the bands summer single 'HowDoILook'.
The band were then invited to perform a live session for KEXP at Iceland Airwaves, then further shows in NYC and LA, before SXSW 2020 beckoned. Tour dates are being rescheduled for 2021.
