"Then he made a billion dollars and he fucked mother nature"
Mothé is the musical project / name of singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Spencer Fort and the debut song "You're So Cool" (produced by Robert Stevenson and Fort) is not only a song for our current times but is a blisteringly cool rocker with new wave / post punk affections that is not afraid to blend a heavy indie / art rock tone with more power pop / pop forward flavors.
Besides the fact that this is just an incredibly catchy song with poetically barbed words, and sure, the Television-esque guitar stabs and the ultra heavy bass sound is heavenly, it's success solely rests on Fort's dynamically rich vocal aesthetic. Whatever descriptor or genre or blends of genres you want to call this track, Fort's croon is perfect for it. The bounce and raw energy had me flashing on different artists until all those disparate connections had me feeling like Fort (in some ways) feels like a blessed amalgam of Brandon Flowers (The Killers) and Jim Carroll (The Jim Carrol Band). It maybe be the outstretched theatrically mixed with a raw ability to spew diatribes about societal problems.
Of the song, Fort says:
"'You're So Cool' is an angst-riddled song highlighting the hypocrisy of talking about issues when they are trending, but not offering a real solution forward. Written from the perspective of a young teen, she realizes that her friends will retweet causes but not actively sign petition or make a long-lasting effort to help. Between the people perpetuating the destruction of Earth, and her peers doing nothing helpful, she's overcome with anger and eventually acceptance that she can't force people to change, but she can control her own actions and make an effort to be a global citizen."
Great theme, incredibly cool, dynamic blendo indie rocker with art rock (maybe even glam affections) and one hell of a vocalist / songwriter. Today is a good day because I found Mothé. Turn it up.

Lyrics to You're So Cool by Mothé
I met a rockstar, yeah I met her one time
With the bright blue jumpsuit fresh off the iron
She's a whisperer of dogs when she's talking to the boys
'Cause she only gets the sick ones barking for her love
Tell me how your dad was a bad, bad man
Fell in love with Sally and he kicked you to the can
But you buried it down underneath your new jacket
Tell me where you got it 'cause you know nobody asked you
You're so cool 'cause you really know it all
Brand new trends got you keeping up, keeping up
World's so gone but all you want to hear is
You're so cool, you're so cool
Andy has tears 'cause there's oil in the ocean
Jack stopped crying 'cause he lost all his emotion
Jeff built a business on the backs of other people
Then he made a billion dollars and he fucked mother nature
People need help but it's easier to scroll past
Faking activism in the for of 'I believe that'
Nice shoes, nice hair, keeping up with fashion
Only have opinions if you know they're going to back them
You're so cool 'cause you really know it all
Brand new trends got you keeping up, keeping up
World's so gone but all you want to hear is
You're so cool, you're so cool
You're so cool 'cause you really know it all
Brand new trends got you keeping up, keeping up
World's so gone but all you want to hear is
You're so cool, 'cause you know you're not the problem
We'll float past it all
Sirens lure me off 'cause I don't want to know
The darkness of the world I could leave it all behind
