"These days I operate the empty A"
Listen to singer-songwriter Noah Chenfeld's pointed and passionate Empty A and you might think of classic folk tones, the stuff of buskers and Bob Dylan. Chenfeld performs it live with friends and family (Laura Danae on keys /vox, Coby Arner on shaker / vox and Dylan Chenfeld on guitar / vox) in his girlfriend's apartment in the East Village. The song is an ode for New York's essential workers through the eyes of an MTA worker.
"Essential workers keep this town alive / so why'd they wait until the first ones died / before they listened to our urgent cries / I guess essential we're not in their eyes"
'Empty A' not only exists as a relevant folk indie song but it pulls in chamber pop affections (minus orchestration) within the somber melodies. The chorus is beautifully sad. It is a song that exists best as it is, without any ostentation production. It is a song that would feel best played on a socially distanced street corner as a sort of musical memorial to the quiet heroes among us all.
New York City born and raised, Noah Chenfeld found his passion in life early. That doesn't happen for the most of us but he started writing songs at only 10 years old and 15 was the front man, uh boy (?) for his own band called The Box Story playing venues local iconic venues like The Bitter End and Studio at Webster Hall.
[In 2018 he began releasing music under his own name, beginning with "Boston", a power-pop song that was played on Sirius XM radio and has accumulated almost 200,000 plays on Spotify. Around this time he also joined forces with his brother to form Rebounder. Rebounder opened up for The Neighbourhood in 2018, and have toured with Dayglow and Cautious Clay. More singles were released in 2019, including "Wind Speed", a song that reflects on the current political climate and has been compared to Warren Zevon. Chenfeld released an EP in 2019 entitled "First', exploring funkier rhythms in "Hassle", and mellower synth textures on "Connection".]
