"I thought you were the fastest man on Earth"
Dual Valley by Los Angeles five- piece alt noise rockers, Earthquake Don't Give A Fuck, is a smile inducing head banger of a song and a maniacal smile at that. The title sounds like a horror movie and if it was it would be directed by Rob Zombie or Alexandre Aja. It has a scorched earth attitude, yes, but there is a nuanced elegance within the noise, chunky staccato guitars, beautifully haunting acidic lead sustains, surprising almost other worldly string sound that oftentimes mirrors Keith Waggoner's vocal aesthetic (that is at once poised in an art rock stare but also in a down turned grunge scowl), the blown out bass lines and the exquisite sideways drumming by Greg DePante's that is dead on heavy but does not step over the emotional dissonance.
Of the track Waggoner shares:
"Stylistically, 'Dual Valley' was a bit of a departure for us. It runs at a slower pace than most of our songs and is more melodic in nature. Everything revolves around this chugging four chord progression that has kind of a martial feel to it. It was the first song we'd written where viola is central to the melody, sort of working in tandem with the vocal. The lyrics are posed as a letter to a friend who flew a little too close to the sun."
The over reaching big sonic sound, the caustic layers of heaviness, the plodding, stalking cadence and vocal melodies that scowl but also ascend in wonderfully artful ways feel like a car crash, an amalgam, of Them Crooked Vultures, Nirvana and Tropical Fuck Storm.
[Earthquake Don't Give a Fuck came together in April 2018. Founding members, Keith Waggoner and Greg DePante, intended the project as a duo featuring guitar and drums, but as the sound developed, the need for more players became apparent. Kevin McLaughlin and Greg Rushin joined in early 2019 on bass and guitar, respectively. Waggoner then invited long-time musical co-conspirator, Shannon De Jong (Amateurs, Holy Folk), to join the group on viola] and she shares:
"The first time I heard the guys playing that driving progression in unison on the verses I got a chill like I was hearing the villains' theme in a Mad Max-type film. (Before I knew the real title I called it "The Bad Guys Are Coming" in my notes, haha.) I love floating on top of that wall of sound with dark trills like some kind of underworld queen or snake charmer, and then joining them in that heaviness on the bridge."
[Earthquake Don't Give a Fuck, are set to release their self-titled debut Sept 18 via LA Hall of Records. Produced by Manny Nieto (HEALTH, The Breeders, The Mars Volta), the nine-track album delivers the ferocity of a punk record, coupled with sonic elements that cast it as anything but. With cutting guitars and a haunting string layer in the forefront, EDGAF’s style is characterized by a palette of angular rhythms, interlaced melodies and harmonic discordance.]
[In October 2019, DePante relocated to Oakland and was replaced on drums by Brandon Goldstein (Amateurs, Money & King). While Goldstein did not play on the album, he contributed backing vocals on several tracks.]
