"it's always raining wishes"
New York born and bred singer songwriter / troubadour Sam Barron pays homage to the Big Apple and to "those who have watched him grow; from his latchkey days as a youth, playing hoops and breakdancing to Planet Rock on the city’s streets, to his adult years in the NYC Antifolk community" in the spartan urban folk classicalism of "New York City". Even with it's nuanced beautiful orchestrations, the track that has an expansive busker feel, as a composition, bounces like early Paul Simon, beats like Lou Reed and rattles like Bob Dylan. Therein lies it's honest beauty.
Barron shares that he grew up with two mothers; the loud Jewish one who battered him into scholastic achievement, and the wild streets above the schist where his sense of adventure and wit formed. As a West Coaster, the dozen times I have visited New York, hanging at the Mercury Lounge, gorging on blissful pizza, gritting my teeth in the back of cabs that feel like Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, I have found New Yorkers to be scrappy, honest to a fault and incredibly nice. Yeah, all peoples are good and bad but that has been my experience. It is nice to hear Barron carry this kind of torch for New York and for folk.
Sam collaborated with his brother, fashion photographer/filmmaker David Barron for the single's visual treatment resulting in a cinematic depiction of New York City's truest essence.
