"getting ready to jump your bones"
The synthetic dystopian push of "Vultures" by Newcastle (UK) based Twist Helix feels like a shot of adrenalin through your veins, if you area robot or clone (hmmmm?) maybe it feels like a shot of extra voltage. Apart from the sort of retro sci-fi sound (I thought of the dance punk of California's Glass Spells) there is an 80's vibe, particularly new wave and industrial punk affections and Bea Garcia’s empowered vocal aesthetic made me somehow think of a car crash of Elizabeth Fraser's (Cocteau Twins) and Lydia Lunch's (Teenage Jesus and the Jerks) solo works though Garcia and Twist Helix overall feels more accessible creating sounds with hard edges but broadly catchy. Sounds that seep into your legs as well, that make you want to move, mosh or dance. Like with Glass Spells work, "Vultures" made me think of "Strange Things" because their sound would fit in that 80's weirdo sci-fi realm so well.
On their new single, Twist Helix offers:
“Vultures' specifically deals with those in the music industry, whose relation to creatives resembles that of facultative predators and scavengers. With this single we wanted to say that as an artist you're in an inherently vulnerable position that makes it very easy to be preyed upon. There are 'Vultures' out there who want to feed off of you, your talents and then leave you with little to show for it. From our point of view the music industry exists to extract works from creatives whilst divesting them of a sense of their worth and their feeling of agency. Too many good bands burn out or cease to be because of dodgy management deals, paltry streaming revenues, and a broader architecture designed to place power in the hands of everyone but the artist."

The inspiration for "Vultures" is a sobering one but artists do have the power to make good art which is the most important thing but, increasingly, the power to disseminate the art and be rewarded in any way is way off balance. Most artists do exist as cattle squirting their milk to be consumed by others with no recompense I'm afraid. I don't know how this will change anytime soon except for all artists having to busk, to play live which is on hold (too) right now. Musical artists have my empathy. Tough times for all of who create things.
God, this sounds so bloody brilliant loud. Play it loud and get on your feet. The potent musical breaks, downbeats are rad and perfect for karate chop poses.

THE FACTS AS WE KNOW THEM - PRESS NOTES:
Relentlessly ploughing through 2020 with an onslaught of new music, Newcastle-based Twist Helix are gearing up for their second album in November. The post-pop trio released the singles ‘Louder’ and ‘Frida Kahlo’ earlier this year, and now they’re about to unleash their third and final single before the main event. ‘Vultures’ will be available to stream and download via Paul Back Music on the 25th September.
Few up and coming artists can lay claim to releasing their second studio album in just four years, in fact, Twist Helix’s creative juices have been flowing none stop since 2016, as they destroy genre boundaries time and time again. Their second album ‘Machinery’ is set to land in November and is without a doubt the most exciting project the band has ever worked on.
The idea of a single is to give an early representation of the full album, and ‘Vultures’ does exactly that. A racey blend of 80s electro and alt rock, Bea Garcia’s inimitable vocals shine through as she gives her take on current issues within the music industry. Featuring heavy synth work, disco beats and infectious lyrics that you’ll be singing along to in no time, ‘Vultures’ is a no-nonsense indie triumph. On their new single, Twist Helix added:

Building an explosive and impactful relationship with their fans across the UK and Spain, Twist Helix have been turning heads since their debut album ‘Ouseburn.’ Their reputation exploded immediately and as a result they’ve played Stockton Calling, Hanwell Hootie and Blackthorn Festival, not to mention headline shows across Britain and Europe. They’ve been championed by BBC Introducing North East and Radio3 (Spanish national radio), as well as receiving a hefty number of highlights and support in the press.
It’s crunch time for Twist Helix, who are on the verge of something very special. Don’t miss out, be there for it.
