"when we run wild..."
I don't know why I thought of Thom Yorke when I listened to the organic musical fusion of "Roam Wide" by Brooklyn based tap dancer, vocalist and producer Liberty Styles (?) I mean it does not sound at all like Yorke but still that mental note remains in my head. There is a exquisite atmosphere here and while each element is crystal clear, from the drum beat punctuated by tap shoes, to the beautiful ambient touches, to the soul jazz flutes tones, to the sort of 1968 bohemian funk meets 90's neosoul vocal aesthetic to the even post rock post punk synthetic edges, you feel a sublime blur too. Maybe it is the sonic sense of the past and present colliding or the absolutely alternative way of bringing in nostalgic tones and progressive ones? Ok, yeah, now I see why I thought of Yorke. It is the divergence here. Really, really special stuff.
"Roam Wide" is the title track off of Liberty Styles recently released EP (check it out on Bandcamp).
Thanks Alyssa (for the lateral pass)

Liberty Styles is a tap dancer, vocalist, and producer based in Brooklyn. Liberty has studied tap dance primarily under Derick K. Grant. While at Columbia University she formed the funk group Liberty Zoo, which was featured on Billboard magazine and opened for Big Sean at the school's annual Bacchanal festival. Since then she has performed as a soloist and with her band on NYC stages including Nublu, ShapeShifter Lab, Knitting Factory, and more. In 2018 she founded a monthly tap jam session in Brooklyn called The Spell which offers space for tap dancers, musicians, and other performers to experiment. In 2019, Liberty released her first solo EP “Flipside,” which features her compositions with live instrumentation, tap dance, and vocals. In her newest EP "Roam Wide," she pays tribute to an adolescence hopping trains and moshing in garages.
