Self described musical dreamer Marika Stuurman based out of San Francisco just released her latest album "Puzzle World" that stirs up bohemian folk psychedelia that feels steeped from 70's folk and current sounds, a hybrid of elegant and raw, of busker and chamber folk pop tones with free form light jazz affections, all with a patina of experimentation. "Apart / Together" is one of Stuurman's favorite tracks from the album. The track feels like the steps up to a dance floor with someone you care about, tentative steps with the excitement of discovery moving through your veins. Stuurman's vocal aesthetic, easy and gliding on bouncy melodies are offset by sliding chord progs, waltzing bass lines and shifting beats. Trumpet lines pull out more surprises as does electric guitars building moments of dissonance that create a lovely tension.
Of the track Stuurman shares:
I wrote this song when my partner spent a few months with family abroad and I suddenly had to adjust to spending a lot of time alone. It begins with the sadness of missing a loved one but ends with a new found self acceptance. In a way the song is about learning how to become a confident individual while being in an intimate relationship, "looking for peace in my own skin, sharing the rhythm of your breath."

I am musical dreamer from San Francisco, CA. I was fascinated with music and performing at a young age - bouncing from guitar to musical theater to classical singing before finding a voice as a songwriter. In recent years I have played with SF based bands Dream Haste and Secret Secret. In addition to performing, I also enjoy nature, photography, and making things. I have a degree in audio engineering but will probably be an existential barista until my ultimate demise. Biking is in my blood (I'm Dutch) and I love my cat (named Devo). "Take A Walk" is the first single from the album titled "Puzzle World" due on March 15th.
