"blossom the mind, be kind"
"Underwater explosions, shock waves, momentum and gaseous voids. Cyclical expansion and contraction from a depth charge can continue for several seconds until the gas bubble vents to the atmosphere."
Brooklyn, New York based Phantom Wave, the indie rock, post punk project of Ian Carpenter (guitar, vocals) and Rachel Fischer (drums) churn out tender moments and grand eruptions of powerful post punk punches (with goth pop affections). The sound on "Depth Charge" doesn't get either over stylized, over produced or over messy. It feels like it is drawn with a dreamy embrace and straightforward passion. I love that. So often, this sound, this genre because it is so vast and evocative gets layered up too much feeling over bloated. But not here. In that respect, even though the pair don't sound like The Cure, Smith and the boys came to mind.
