"I hear temptation call..."
There is a moment during the song "Burning" (by The Tell) when a wonderful counterpoised synth melody offsets other swelling sounds, big ascensions, erupting drums and Noah Dickie's cool vocal wails repeating "I'm burning for you". It is the last climactic coda and it lasts about 45 seconds. It is special maybe not because what it is (in and of itself) but because of what preceded it. From the onset of "Burning" the musical narration, fueled by bell toned keys and Dickie's evocative vox push right into you, the barreling of lyrical content feels more like a chorus than any verse, or pre-chorus. The repetitive nature becomes a part of an intricate wash of sounds and singularly focused emotions. It feels non linear in the sense that the sounds seem to take you on a quest, a journey that shifts and turns inside out. The music feels both nuanced and on slippery edges as Dickie's passionate vox and torn poetry feels emotionally improvisational. That might be were the intrigue lies, in the Id being on full display.
Of the track Dickie offers:
“Burning” evokes themes of lust and regret against a backdrop of ‘80s new wave/disco and waves of orchestral sounds, taking us on a universal quest (“I hear the journey calling/I know I’ll take it someday”) that partakes equally of sensual desire and spirit, beseeching the object of his adoration, “I hope I find you someday.” The fever of desire and longing is stoked by a mythical incantation, the creative process itself the destination, underlining the importance of being “somewhere right now.”
The Tell is a new project from James McAlister (Taylor Swift, The National) and Noah Dickie (Coastwest Unrest). "Burning" is elevated by Tyler Chester's (of Andrew Bird's crew) amazing bass work that becomes emotional connective tissue.
