"no concept of time..."
The idea that our lives are not our lives at all but merely someone else's construct, dream or simulation has been the fodder for many books and movies. In fact "simulations theories" have been gaining cosmological steam among scientists and philosophers for the last couple of decades. In 2016*, American celebrity astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson proposed the chance that our lives are actually a computer simulation at 50/50, noting the huge intelligence gap between humans and chimpanzees even though we share over 98 percent of our DNA and surmised that their might be beings who have a similar 'greater' gap saying: “We would be drooling, blithering idiots in their presence,” adding “If that’s the case, it is easy for me to imagine that everything in our lives is just a creation of some other entity for their entertainment." I thought about this as I listened to the dark electronica of "Simulation" by Sweetheart in Dutch.
Sweetheart in Dutch is the new musical project from musician, music-writer Alyssa Holland and "Simulation" may or may not be about computer simulations at all. Maybe the thrust is more metaphorical about how we simulate emotions (or maybe not). The lo-fi electronica cast dark imagery against a bouncy machine beat with synth lines bending (sometimes) outside of the lines. The bass tones feel proto punkish and Holland's steely, yet pretty vocal aesthetic is encapsulated in the haze. The sound feels part regressive sci-fi, part horror pop and part Kraftwerk-ian proto punk. Holland self recorded and produced with final mastering by Geza X (Black Flag, the Bags, Germs).
Expect a full length this fall 2021 "encapsulating dystopian turmoil and sociological conundrums."
