"sound of a signaling of a signal of a sign..."
There is something so absolutely dark, dreamy and nostalgic about North Wales bred, Manchester based retro-pop duo The Brambles and their track "California". The vintage synth stabs, forceful drum beats, double time rhythms and droning synthetic orchestrations fuel a thick atmosphere for Owen Kimpton's evocative vox to cut through. His tender moving vocal aesthetic makes me think of a sort of amalgam of Andrew Eldritch (The Sisters of Mercy) and Bryan Ferry. There is also a lovely bit of harmonies that add depth and an ambient sample of a foreign language (Japanese?) that lends an air of artful mystery.
The Brambles are the work of composer ‘Lil n’ and vocalist Owen Kimpton.

Founded in North Wales in 2020, The Brambles are an alternative retro-pop duo based in Manchester, influenced by the likes of The Avalanches and LCD Soundsystem. Complex sampling and elusive lyrical content defines the work of composer ‘Lil n’ and vocalist Owen Kimpton.
In title track, ‘California’, the band explores a fictional simulated world in which they see themselves becomemonstrous and unrecognisable. In ‘Casting Couch’, the band pays homage to the artists who inspire their distinctive sampling style.
