"small town dramatics feed the fanatics..."
"Terry Mackenzie by Cardiff (UK) based The Crawling Eye, the musical project of Simon Thomas and Matthew Witherstone (90's Interzone), is stunning in it's earnest sort of Brit pop / rock sound that to me reflects the kind of 70's folk / mod / indie rock synergy of bands like The Kinks and The Who. I, in fact, immediately thought of those iconic bands when I listened to the formidable intense energy brought to bear by Simon Thomas's potent vocals and the tightly formed musical framework and handclaps raining down from Matthew Witherstone on guitars and vox, Sean Davies on Bass and vox and Frank Naughton on Drums. There is a fair amount of 80's dashy power pop energy here as well and chamber pop, dare I say Beach Boys-isms floating around in the outro as well.
This track feels like something from Top of the Pops (back in the day). "Terry Mackenzie" is from a single of the same name and the B-side is "Murder Ballad No. 6" and both are from the upcoming album "Wax Lyrical".

Simon Thomas was the singer and Matthew Witherstone was the guitarist in 90's indie band Interzone. They had an EP released on an independent label, signed a publishing deal with Universal then imploded. They both gave up on music. 18 months ago Matthew joined alternative band Ten No.6. He'd written a bunch of songs that didn't fit that group, so mentioned to Simon the possibility of recording a few of them at Frank Naughton's studio in Cardiff. The resulting EP was released independently and has been well received. A recent live performance of the yet unrecorded second EP on GTFM was also well received.
