"old man I'd be a liar if I told you it was all ok..."
The Mummy Cats origin story involves a Craigslist musical meeting which in and of itself is kind of a miracle. Whether it was fate or Craigslist or both, James Cox and Morgan Liveoak found each other and found out that the same creative desires coursed through their veins. That is a good thing and lucky thing because judging by my first introduction to this pair via the track "Leonard", these two both have divergent tastes. This track not only feels a bit surreal, very trippy and tells stories that drops just enough bait for us listeners to bite but Cox and Liveoak don't reveal everything. The late 70's kind of funky rock aesthetic, the thick guitar line sustains, the kind of house party stoner affections and the delicious, eccentric sway works. The sound is pulpish, deep but cooly fun and steeped in bohemian smoke rings.
The boys share:
"This is a story about a man and the often wicked condition of the human heart. The things we choose to justify have intended and unintended consequences, often times circulating throughout the world in unforeseen ways. 'Leonard' is a song but also a man, a man who’s life was, at an early age, unchecked by love and compassion. Some actions are inexcusable, but even though there’s better roads, in the end, peace can find a man whenever he goes."

Is it not fascinating what Craigslist has made possible since the site started in the 1990s. The number of interesting, beautiful, weird, funny, or heart-warming stories or situations connected to the platform are enumerable, and founder Craig Newmark might still be astonished sometimes.
Nevertheless, this is the story of James Cox, who used to work as a power tool salesman in Tennessee and then moved back to his home town Birmingham, Alabama to focus on his major passion music. Via Craigslist, Cox got in contact with guitar player Morgan Liveoak. The two musicians realized that they talked the same language when they were jamming and creating songs together – it was a match! After one and half years of work, James Cox and Morgan Liveoak decided to start releasing their music – and then… The Mummy Cats were born.
