When I sink myself into "Tivoli" by The Paper Sea, the L.A. based instrumental project of Jared Matt Greenberg (who you may of heard playing cornet or keyboards for the post rock Whale Fall or as a founding member of the 90's San Francisco shoegaze band, The Rosemarys, or with Charles Atlas in the early 2000's or enhancing the sound of other artists like John Vanderslice, Dart, Sutro, An American Starlet, Carta and others) my rattled brain slows down, my heartbeat softens. I imagine myself elsewhere, maybe strolling through a quaint village near water somewhere in Europe.
"Tivoli" gently dances into your head with a cadence that resembles something between an Irish sea shanty or a French accordion waltz but in elegant form pushed along with chimes, what feels like a Farfisa organ, synths, strings, maybe a Mellotron and gentle tom toms. There are oohs and aahs (synthetic or not) and a muted sense of psychedelia, of whimsy and nostalgia. It sounds like a lost track from Wes Anderson's 'The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou' soundtrack or the absurdist, surreal French / Spanish classic 'Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie ' by Luis Buñuel as there is something wonderfully a little bit 'off' within Greenberg's melodies and soundscape here. Not crazy by any stretch but amusing and beautifully naïve.
Do me a favor and listen to "Tivoli" before you go to sleep tonight. You might have some interesting dreams. "Tivoli" is from The Paper Sea's debut album "Shadow Falls".

THE PAPER SEA is the solo project of Jared Matt Greenberg, cornet player and keyboardist for the post-rock quintet Whale Fall. Greenberg was a founding member of 1990s San Francisco shoegaze band The Rosemarys and teamed with Charles Wyatt to form Charles Atlas in the early 2000s, as well as playing with John Vanderslice, Dart, Sutro, An American Starlet, Carta, and others. After experiences touring the world and placing music in film and television, Greenberg comes home with THE PAPER SEA: intimate instrumental music recorded in Los Angeles, grounded in piano, laced with synths and organs, strings, and horns, and resonant with childhood memories, wistful moments, and lasting love.
