"drop that hero like a mic so this how it ends..."
"Drop That Hero" by Jason Lytle (and from the stunning 3 way split single "Over and Outsider" featuring Lytle of Grandaddy, Tyler Ramsey, formerly of Band Of Horses and Kramies each contributing minimally produced solo works) is as hypnotically beautiful as it is almost oppressively melancholy. The song puts you in an altered state, so much so that even though it has a languid emotional tone and lands at 4 minutes and 33 seconds, the song somehow flies by. The sadness drips from every textured guitar string, the light feeling of surreal (even stilted) orchestration and Jason's slow motion words that build a milieu of quiet pain, resentment, anger and resolution.
Jason shares:
“Some days I can feel pretty down and at odds with everything. Other days I can feel pretty untouchable and heroic. This song is about getting dumped during a period of feeling untouchable and heroic. I think it fits nicely with this small batch of songs.”
The project was stoked by Kramies who is known for his dreamy folk (and own brand of folklore) and with his work with producers Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, Jerry Becker of Train, and Todd Tobias of Guided by Voices. His contribution, "She's Low Tide", steps through a dark looking glass. Tyler Ramsey's transforming "Arrow To Bow" has peaks of valleys to roam in and reflect. Musical guitar passages that push against the lines and step over them too.
Tyler shares:
“I met Kramies in Colorado a while back when Carl Broemel and I were on a duo tour driving across the country. He opened a show we did in Denver and was such a sweetheart and we stayed in touch. I think he has a gold heart. When he reached out about this split single project I was in the process of writing a bunch of new songs for a new album. This one is made up of blurry images of touring and travel and questioning what is worth giving your time to. Happy I was able to be a part of this project with Kramies and Jason who I love and admire as well."
This project via VanGerrett Records out of Cleveland, Ohio feels like a special gift, a blessing really. I hope you absorb all three songs that are so different but somehow compliment each other. I would love to see a concert where Jason, Tyler and Kramies trade stories and stripped down songs all night.
