"Take me off that assembly line..."
For a song that is about the toxicity around us that a lot of us gleefully consume like mindless zombies, it is a song that feels exquisitely chill. "Turpentine" from Nathaniel Paul's sophomore album (due to drop in early Summer 2022 via AWAL) has a sonic narrative with guitar lines that seem to run up stairs and down too. Those sounds bend and flutter as bass line dance and punctuates the down to earth vocal melody. It runs too but never gets out of breath as the drum beat trips and skates along without a care in the world. The overall sound blending indie pop with elements of light jazz and lounge punk has complexities that feel simple and the house party, dance in the kitchen in your socks vibe belies the theme distilled in the first line "take me off that assembly line, veins are filled with turpentine..." and, as press notes indicate, refers to "the state of homogeneity that has been created through the overconsumption of news, social media, and the internet at large."
The entertaining Official Video finds Paul upside down a lot of the time:
“I almost died shooting this video” states Paul. “I thought it wasn’t going to be all that bad. But when your actually hanging upside down, it really gives you tunnel vision,” he laughs. “But honestly, we live in a world of chemicals and social media trying to kill us all the time, I thought this was the perfect way to convey the message of the song.”
“Turpentine” is the follow up to his critically acclaimed 2021 debut album “Learning to Listen”. When not wearing the rabbit mask or hanging upside down, you might more easy recognize Nathaniel Paul from the wildly loved The Bergamot. As a solo artist, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer he builds his sonic universes arranging all aspects with his own hands right side up.
