"someone's gotta stay here and get the job done..."
UK composer, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, DIY producer Joshua Woo, on his latest, enchanting, deeply groovy shape shifter "10-2-1" moves effortlessly from one expanding rabbit hole to the next. The musical narrative feels cinematic from the interplanetary operatic tones, to soul pop grooves that exist somewhere between progressive rock pushes to indie (sort of desert rock) vast bits of hazy psychedelia. The many sonic transformations make sense given Woo's penchant for deep storytelling.
Woo builds this deeply personal universe from an organic and synthetic backstory:
"In this song the main character in the lyrics is the last person left on Earth after everyone has been evacuated to another planet due to the adverse effects of climate change. They're basically responsible for cleaning everything up and making the Earth livable again. It's also a song about loneliness, isolation and inner conflict. I wrote a produced the song myself. It also features synthesizers from Delta Crab, and artwork from Emilia Lindahl."
Apart from the different flavors, Woo graces the song with a lead vocal aesthetic that feels cool and emotionally rich. In the beginning and in the end, "10-2-1" creates a sonic story that you want to see played out like a Netflixian binger.
