"they’ll never say your name when you die, I doubt they’ll ever say mine..."
If the smooth, sometimes dark and syrupy alt pop track "Mediocre" by Stoke (UK) sonic and visual artist Onyda was a movie it would be a late 60's velveteen affair with seductive twists and turns involving musicians elbows deep in gambling debt and gangsters. Ok, maybe not but that feels right to me. Maybe it is the sort of lush torch song sway that has grandeur but also an undercurrent of burlesque meets glam bump and grind. It could also be Onyda's (which is the moniker of Shae Rhiannon) exquisitely beautiful alluring voice that feels like a stunning cross generational amalgam of artists like Lulu, Amy Winehouse (RIP) and Petula Clark.
About "Mediocre" Onyda shares: “I've been really lucky in my life, I know what I'm good at and I've been able to share that with others from a young age through performing, people have always had high expectations for me. However, I also grew up being heavily influenced by social media like everyone else from my generation and the pressure to present as this amazing, flawless being is unobtainable for us all. Let's just be a bit shit and be ok with it.”

Inspired by the vast concrete expanse of Stoke that they call home, Onyda (real name Shae Rhiannon) has descended like a dystopian cowboy clad in jewel-hued velvet. An obsessive creator, Onyda works with music, visuals, film, fashion and artwork, and draws upon a wide range of influences from the beats of Tyler the Creator to the songs of Peggy Lee and Tame Impala. Visually, they’re inspired by scenes of Boogie Nights; The Good, The Bad and the Ugly and This Is England, with Onyda embracing the queerness of life in an industrial northern town through an acid soaked lens.
With an EP arriving in 2022, the five track project has been backed by the talents of producer Ben Hillier (Blur, Doves, Elbow) and follows a run of support from Radio 1 and 1Xtra. Onyda was also invited to play at Glastonbury on the BBC Introducing stage, and most recently saw single ‘Like A Dog’ added to Vevo’s Emerging Artist Playlist, and chosen as BBC Introducing as their ‘Single Of The Week’. An artist with great intellect and a unique creative vision, Onyda shows great promise as an artist to watch out for in 2022.
