"everything I say makes no difference, no one would believe me so I turned off your TV..."
There is a tendency, when you decipher the meaning (or what you think is the meaning) of a song by young artists to flippantly say that what they are expressing is the crushing weight of being young when all along they are expressing feelings, challenges, ordeals, holding up mirrors of self discovery that really aren't anything to do about being (just) young but about being human. I thought about this when listening to the exquisite, moving poetry of "Whittier" by Southern, Massachusetts' indie rock / dream pop band Overnight from their upcoming debut 6 song EP "Blush" set to drop in less than two weeks on January 28th (2022).
The song is so well constructed, hinging on sounds that equally hold the weight of emotions as much as the lyrics and melodies handed to us gently by Cici Monarch. After the stunning opening with truly beautiful electric guitars dancing against Cici's plaintive words, the song ramps up during the verses, feels like it is running, like it is late for a departing plane. The erupting chorus, especially it's second half, now is sprinting, the urgency expressed by excited drumming (love the offbeat snare surf beat), the double time guitars and winding bass lines and as the shoegazey guitar haze floods in Cici's vocal aesthetic feels more put upon. The musical journey / narrative never stands still but shift many times over, not only in emotional tempo but in the sonic landscape Overnight is creating completely. Layers are built up, sometimes subtly and sometimes harshly and pealed back and changed again. The words move in concert with the music in a brilliant way.
The themes of standing invisible in a relationship and losing yourself are universal, are beautifully embraced in this track that was written by the band. Overnight is Cici Monarch (vocals), Luci Trafton (bass), Larkin Tanner (guitar), Jason Frankel (guitar, backing vocals) and Patrick Hale (drums). "Blush" was recorded and produced by Benny Groto at Mad Oak Studios in Allston, Mass.
