"In the middle of the widespread dread / There’s a little Kings County smile..."
Sometimes you stare or listen to art that you don't fully understand. Maybe the shapes don't make a lot of sense or the poetry you think you are trying to decipher feels like it is upside down or inside out. Still, you stare, your head leaned to one side. You revel in the sounds, you think you like but you are not sure and the only thing you find yourself doing (in this case) is staring or listening again and again. That might be the case with New York based Pastel Hell and the highly theatrically rendered art pop or rock sideways parabolic "No Encore". The big washes of sound that feel bathed in Goth pop / punk lights and the scenery chewed vocal aesthetic can (in a certain light) feel anti-dada (or the opposite) or purposely glacially ironic (or not). There is a lot of odd atmospheric things happening as well as a lot of surreal beauty here.
In the end, maybe this feels like a stirring slow dance at a glitter ball high school dance in an 80's John Hughes movie but swap out that John with John Waters.
"No Encore" is the first glimpse of the full length album "Ruthie" by Pastel Hell, the moniker / project name of Alex Fox Tschan who writes, arranges and performs all the songs on this upcoming collection due to drop on February 25th, 2022.
