"see my girl she shivers in her bones..."
"Spaceman" by London born, Los Angeles based singer-songwriter alt pop visionary RAIGN is the kind of song that places you right in the middle of a tumultuous ride. There is a lot going on stylistically as if the sonic vision here is a mere movie trailer for an upcoming blockbuster that you want to see. That movie would surely be one with Inception like layers of reality. RAIGN's penchant for sonic universe building hinges on her big voice and sense of theatricality. Within her deeply evocative vocal persona you feel a deep framework of baroque pop but you also feel the dark and romance waves born out of early 80's new wave and post punk fusing together. "Spaceman" also has grand orchestral movements inherent in rock classicalism / art rock and booming toms and textured synths carrying dense contemporary pop rock power. In the end the sound is highly cinematic, again, referring back to that movie you want to see after steeping in this sound.
It is no wonder that RAIGN and producer Robbie Lamond (Ellie Goulding/Lana Del Rey) has built another alt pop piece of cinema that will surely, SURELY, grace a future movie or Netflix binger as her music has graced other soundtracks including heavy inclusion on The Vampire Diaries and Grey’s Anatomy.
RAIGN reflects:
“I remember listening to the original release on vinyl in the 90s but warped at Drum’n’Bass speed because we were mixing it into a mixtape. I had a blast putting a cinematic twist on this tune and wanted to make it feel like watching a rocket taking off to save the world in a blockbuster movie.”
As I listen to "Spaceman" over and over again, I hear subtleties as well as huge darkly drawn almost operatic embellishments. RAIGN can belt out like no other but maybe the ramping up emotionality at the very beginning captures me the most, it is maybe her at her most vulnerable before the empowering fireworks.
