"maybe life is simple and I'm making it hard..."
"Alamo" from Bloomington, Indiana based Russian Cowboy, and from their 2022 full length "A Slow Migration West", is a biting and mournful twangy indie rocker with country / cow punk flavors. The vocal aesthetic is bold, even soaring chewing up and spitting out bits of broken Americana imagery. I did think a little bit of Bakersfield, California's Cracker (and David Lowery) and their sort of desert rock country sound as I enjoyed "Alamo". There is a lot to like, a lot to absorb from the sonic reflections of the bright guitars, potent bass and drums. Love how the braking drum fills signal a slow down, love the tempo shift like deep remembrances punctuated with slide guitar and the eventual big upswing. AND love the poetry in the words. They are everything here. Damn.
"A Slow Migration West" is an album that begs you to listen hard from vast opaque poetic storytelling of "Siblicide" that feels darkly bittersweet like a midnight movie that makes you look over your shoulder while walking home after seeing it. The punk hearted "Know My Name" and "Bubonic Plague", in some ways, feel like a collision of Lou Reed and The Stooges if their busker punk and punk rock were pedal steeled fueled, amazing. "Same Ol' Thing" and "White Noise / Voice" runs hard too- with rockabilly punk punch ferocity which made me flash on old school sounds like The Blasters and even X.
Pour yourself your favorite drink, turn the lights low and dive deep into Russian Cowboy.
