On "Half the Keys" by Brooklyn's 4 piece indie / electronic rock band, Social Creatures, there is a lot going on. While not succumbing to the current pop tropes, the song shifts effortlessly from flavor to flavor, tonally, infusing the overall sound with joyous vibes, crisp passionate vox that slide into falsettos, jammy guitars, funky /soulful bass and drum jags. The thing is that by the time you get to the end the sound is startlingly different than the start and in between, the fallaways to dirty keyboard, the building soul pop atmospheres and the runaway instrumental passages turn and makes your head spin in wonderful ways. It is almost like you are walking down a long hallway and darting into party rooms with different djs.
The soundscapes all work, fit together and the last puzzle piece coda is unique and stands apart from the rest of the song. The sort of Pixies meets Fastball (?) surprise leaves a sweet twist in your mouth. I thought of a vast array of artists from M83, Jamiroquai, Tame Impala and even Arcade Fire. The breath and scope here is compelling and fascinating. Social Creatures is currently mastering their debut album.
