"and each sunset brings stories until dawn, they go on and on..."
"Memory Vortex" by "a long hypothetical band" called Ambrosia is a song full of whimsy and grand illusions. It is also quirky due to David B. Greenberg's and Katherine Dohan's homey style that sits comfortably between that cool aunt and uncle you used to visit who would entertain you on the piano off the kitchen and Sesame Street. That is to say, their vocal aesthetic feels like community, city parks and no skeletons in the closet. The band, the project after all is as they say "a joyful outlet for spontaneous recordings of their vulnerable, spirited duets" and that is what you get here. You also get a lot more. The piano sing-a-long musically expands to something between mellow art rock that ends up feeling like midnight rendezvous down rabbit holes. There are baroque pop sensations too with sort of honkytonk keyboard shapes and eventually something grand and non-denominational church like. The funny thing is that it feels so pure, so pure that it can also feel sideways in the same way that The Talking Heads or Sparks can feel like they are celebrating Americana but slightly lampooning it at the same time. I actually don't think that David and Katherine are doing that here, in fact I know it but some of you might feel that duality.
Lovely, charming, disarming and intriguing. "Memory Vortex" is from the recently released 2022 EP "Tears".

A long-hypothetical band (with a previously-used name that just stuck), Ambrosia is a collaboration between old friends Katherine Dohan and David B. Greenberg--a joyful outlet for spontaneous recordings of their vulnerable, spirited duets. Sometimes contemplative, sometimes rock n' roll, Ambrosia’s adventurous songs seek both solace and catharsis through enthusiastic unison singing, playful psychedelia, and a comforting groove.
