"the red dirt courses through my veins..."
"Cue" by Australian post hardcore /punk outfit Last Quokka is by any definition the most mosh worthy track AP has featured in at least the last 6 months. It is the first glimpse of the band's upcoming album. Their 5th release since their birth in 2016 that band has grown through some sonically and physically and "Cue" signals the expansion. The divergent jaggedness, absolutely unbridled urgency is reflected in the huge downbeats, walls of guitars and syncopated energy. Trent Rojahn's impassioned growls and howls spoken or rebel yelled might be central to the feral nature here but the entire band from the proto punk-esque bass lines courtesy of Raymond Grenfell, the bending and fanning lovely brutality of the guitars courtesy of Quokka veteran Kirill Ivoutin and Quokka newbie Justin Zanetic and new drummer Carlota Rivera who brings a rabid, frenetic energy, the total effect is exquisitely powerful. Despite me going on with all the talk of feral and raw energy, the musicality here is incredible focused, dense and top notch. I love the tightly wound sound with instruments mirroring musical melodies with intense explosions of sound stopping on a dime to let progressive patterns take center stage.
The track was recorded at Hopping Mouse Studios in Fremantle, Western Australia and mastered by Simon Struthers. I look forward to hearing the new album.
