"you could take me anywhere..."
The title track from Brisbane based Rich Uncle's latest EP "Deuteranomaly" (the scientific name for Red/Green color blindness) has a sound that pushes heavy dreamy post punk vibes pushed through shoegazey fliters too. The very bottom heavy fuzzy tube sound of the guitars makes me think of Yuck (Daniel Blumberg circa) with other sonic cues (to my ears) that made me flash on Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth. The guitar slides, heavy bass tones and wonderfully slippery fluid drumming creates such a tight yet somehow elusive feel. George Battams' vocal aesthetic has the carefree starry eyed somber lilt of youth and when "Deuteranomaly" opens up, gets so heavy and expansive with the bass dancing around a melodic lead guitar line it feels so damn beautiful that your body almost feels lighter. The musical coda is so so exquisitely dense.

Hailing from Brisbane Australia, four-piece indie-rock outfit Rich Uncle fuze hazy guitars with striking melodies to create an infectious take on the genre that’s both tongue-in-cheek & endearingly angsty. After meeting serendipitously when brothers George & Adam & their longterm friend Liam found Billy rummaging through a skip bin outside an IGA, it was no question the four would form a band. Since their debut single ‘Signals’ in 2017, the self-confessed broke musicians, Rich Uncle, have been discerning the highs & lows of life as twenty-somethings, navigating socialisation & isolation in a way that makes listeners bop, dance & reflect. Supporting local cult-followed bands Bugs, Verge Collection & Great Gable on the live circuit, Rich Uncle’s dreamy, energetic sentiment resonates on stage, captivating audiences with a soundscape of melodic nostalgia.
