Songs that don't adopt the pop conventions of the day or the indie tropes that anchor them in a certain time or decade give us something else to spark the synapses in our brain. Sonic cues that give us comfort as faint pop remembrances allowing us to escape into the art of it all, to happily go someplace else. It is the same reason we dip ourselves into fiction books and movies. I felt this sort of surreal time traveling sense when I first heard "Miss Lady" by the interesting, divergent Austin based singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Michael Sanders.
The wonderful thing about art is that everyone's cues are personal to the one who is listening. As I have always said songs are sonic Rorschach Tests. Just as an aside, one of my favorite pieces of music is the live performance of Radiohead's "The Numbers" from ‘A Moon Shaped Pool’ featuring Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and a CR78 drum machine. Stripped down away, from the avant garde orchestration on the studio album, you hear those sonic cues even more. I hear bits and pieces reflective of Led Zeppelin circa 1975 and those same pieces might (to other people) conjure up Neil Young or Nick Drake. I love this aspect about music and what I really love is that this happens even though Thom Yorke is likely just composing from whole cloth and maybe pulling unknowingly at his own artful fabric, the tapestry of things he has collected in his brain. A tapestry that might even be a collective one a Jungian consciousness of sorts, but (sorry) I digress.
Michael Sanders' evocative, beautiful and, yes, time traveling "Miss Lady" feels to me like something that could of existed in the mid 70's. It has both a grand, elegant texture while feeling down to earth. The production from the onset feels very baroque pop, sort of Elton John (circa 1975). I thought of Rufus Wainwright as well (a bit). Sanders' vocal aesthetic alone is worth the price of admission but there is so much more to take in. The swelling sounds, the art rock swings with amazing bending double lead guitars. The trance like bits of psychedelia floating in those synths that have the sensation of orchestral strings and Mellotron tones combined. The tight dance between the bass and drums (I love the pointing snap of the bass). Sanders' narrative here, again with a surreal sense is also extremely romantic. It could be a gothic ghost story even. Stare into this song's void and I wonder what mental cues come to your mind.
