"Too tired to think / About me or anybody else / Breathe out and blink / This earth could swallow me and I couldn't care less..."
Sam Tompkins stunning trajectory from a 16 year old busking on the streets of Brighton, England to amassing a world wide audience only 6 years later including musical heavy weights Elton John, Bastille and Justin Bieber as fans and supporters is amazing but not surprising. Sam possesses an incredible voice that can disarm, penetrate the chest, invade the heart of even the most hardened cynic. His latest "Hero" accompanied with a moving filmic Official Video is a simple piece of artful truth and hope. The song is clad in the beautiful dressings of Sam's gripping vocal aesthetic full of passion, melancholia and longing as it moves on acoustic guitar and lovely pop orchestrations on a beat that feels like it is running up hill. As the sounds flood your senses and Sam's croon becomes more emotional it is quite apparent that his personal reflections informed by his dad's personal struggles digs deep into your heart.
It is a pivoting life changing moment when children sort of swap places with a parent, when the child musters up the strength to give back the love and support that was given to them during their tender years. Not giving a hug or sharing tears because doing so might open a floodgate of emotions that might break the both of you is easy to do. Avoidance is a skill we all learn to easily. It is difficult to embrace someone at their lowest point but those times define us. Those moments are fleeting, they happen at the oddest of times but please don't let them pass by because if you do you might regret missing those times for the rest of you own days on this earth. "Hero" touches me so deeply and it will touch many.
On the personal track Sam shares: “Hero is a really personal song. It’s a tribute to the courage my dad showed when he persevered through one of the hardest periods of his life.”
As fucking amazing as the song and Official Video is, my favorite part is not the song itself but the end of the Video when Sam calls his father on the phone and says, "I love you dad" and his dad says, "Love you too".
