"Trust Issues" by So Cal Inland Empire's ska punk outfit The Odd Advantage starts off with Abraham H. Parnassus (Adam Driver) talking about his work as an oil baron before a full on punk, post hardcore assault happens, then at only 33 seconds in the beautifully skank inducing horns signal this band's core sound. These guys are inspired by Ska, punk and reggae and stepping into (wish I still had creepers) their sound with the pumped up walking bass intricacies, the amazing muted down / bright up muted staccato guitar rhythms, the sort of Zombies psyche surf organ, the soulful grinding vocal aesthetic and those aforementioned dirty cool horns and you get the real thing: Carribean mento, calypso, jazz and R&B churned up with punk, the essence of ska. I have always dug this sound, this movement and The Odd Advantage made me flash on old school artists like The Specials, Bad Manners, Sublime, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Fishbone.
"Trust Issues" is from the band's 2021 EP "Pandas in Pandemic" which you need to check out. Also investigate The Odd Advantage's You Tube channel for some cool live performances.
