"she said she'd leave for West Berlin..."
Düsseldorf, Germany based Subterfuge's halcyon days might of been (to some) during the fertile indie pop years between 1993 and 2005 during which time the band produced 4 studio albums. After that the band's other side /solo projects and individual journeys tentacled them out away from each other until about 2 years ago when fate brought Daniel, Kai, Lars, Lorenz, Tom and Tommy back together again. Their final single before the release of their anticipated fifth studio album entitled "Dots" is the nostalgic time bending "Why Do I Always Fail To Win". Drenched in a sort of 60 Brit Pop sonic milieu with dashes of glam / art rock I thought of an amalgam of artists like The Kinks, Sparks, T-Rex and The Beatles. The stair stepping guitar notes, honky tonk acoustic piano, exquisite vox that slip effortlessly into pretty falsettos and occasional grand soft dissonance is so captivating. You are literally pulled, sucked back into a paisley past when things seemed less divisive, at least musically. Love this.

Formed in 1991 SUBTERFUGE are one of a handful German first generation Indiepop groups that are still around. Between 1993 and 2005 the band recorded four studio albums. Other priorities in life and solo projects came into the way of any joint activities, while time passed and Daniel, Kai, Lars, Lorenz, Tom and Tommy stayed closest friends. Around 2 years ago the group came back together in their original line up to work on material for a new album. In the meantime Lorenz had become a skilled producer while all band members were soaked up with more than a decade of additional musical experiences and influences. Hence arranging and recording the album at Hedgehog Recorders turned out to be a permanent discovery path for the band in all sorts of new musical directions while at the same time sticking to their roots in indie pop with jangly guitars and vocal harmonies.
After returning with Stephanie Said and The Snake Wife here is the next Subterfuge single The Good Good: A Bedroom Pop type of song with a view into a typical tempestuous artist soul with writers blocks and doubts about one’s own relevance.
Listen and enjoy - long live pop music!
