"I want to begin in Oregon / On a window seat by a bookcase / Weed in the truth and read about youth / I've been wondering how to make it stay..."
Cactus Tree is the moniker of singer-songwriter / indie folk artist Tori Smith based out of Utah and her song "Sunstone" is bathed in the classicalism of vintage Irish folk songs with even a sort of English Medieval music cadence belying her youthful age. This artful rustic sense combined with lyrics that peer around magical corners is beautiful in the way it draws you in. Tori's vocal aesthetic is all her own and I love the character of her voice. She has a way of sustaining words out on a poetic precipice and even shaping words her own way and in a landscape where a lot of young voices may sound too much like a Phoebe Bridgers it is wonderful to hear a young artist who sounds like only herself.
She shares:
["Sunstone" is about finding yourself deconstructing personal beliefs about life and the world. It's about finding independence, and all the uncertainty that comes with it. This song has the essence of a coming of age story, but can relate to any stage of life. "Sunstone" is used as a metaphor for something you find yourself turning toward in the most tumultuous moments of life.]
