Grimson and the Technicolor sway of "Good Dreams"

 

"I want some good dreams (good dreams) / So I can sleep through the night (through the night)..."

Within the expansive hug of "Good Dreams" by Grimson, a super talented Swedish / American, Berlin based songwriter and animator, I feel a sort of 60's white picket fence idyllic sheen, a crushing Beach Boys beauty and Audrey Hepburn smile. There are hints of surreal worries, of coarse wrinkles in finely pleated slacks but the sort of sprite surf beat and Technicolor sunshine pushes back and warms your heart. Grimson's voice is so endearing as are his melodies and the sparkly pushed keys, backing harmonies and pretty jazz embellished lead guitar work that all sparkles like sunshine on wet pavement after a storm. The lovely sounds that step and turn on it's heels are birthed from dark teenage anxieties as Grimson shares: 

"Good Dreams reflects on my very real experiences of insomnia as a teenager.

Suffering intense anxiety and depression, I couldn’t sleep enough hours to stay lucid during school, and those brief interludes he did rest were riddled with nightmares and sleep paralysis. This fear of sleep brought upon the titular line of the song, “I want some good dreams, so I can sleep through the night,” which, when sung as a sunny bossanova ballad, feels more like an eerie threat than vacant rhetoric.

Finally recorded at the age of 23 in Berlin, I tried to bring a lush and almost opiate-like sonic arrangement that feels a bit like being covered in a heavy duvet, which can almost persuade the listener into thinking this is indeed a happy song."

I absolutely love the sweeping angles of "Good Dreams", the ebullient heart beating in a melancholic body.
