"...I know nobody's perfect but c'mon, you kidding me..."
Nick Leng's vibey "Morning / Midnight" is the A-side of his new double single (B-side: "My Mind is a Mess in the Morning") and if you let it sink into your brain and heart it will literally put a flow in your step. If you listen while going for your morning walk, your neighbor might wonder what has gotten into you as you slide and sway down the sidewalk. The South African born, Los Angeles based artist begins the track with a surreal sun rising sensation as he plays a beautiful melodica melody over an improvisational classical piano pieces he crafted and chopped up in interesting ways. The artful result, that sort of feels like a sonic representation of what Guillermo del Toro might come up if he was crafting a children's story, puts you in this lovely headspace. And then the transcendent funky walk starts up.
Nick shares:
"'Morning / Midnight' was started there as well one late night when I was chopping up a classical piano improvisational piece I had recorded, on a sampler. There's a video on my Instagram of me playing the melodica in the intro in the morning and the sun peeked through that ended up in the final version. I had considered dividing that intro, with the chopped piano and the 'second part' when the beat comes in, into two songs, but the journey of the intro, and duality and sensation of when the bass and kick comes in, had a real story to it that it cemented the conviction that it’s one idea."
Surreal, whimsical, funky with proto-punkian, new wave electronica heartbeats, "Morning / Midnight" is my cup of tea. Nick's vocal aesthetic feels self assured and unwavering in it's originality. There is no need for dips into current indie tropes here. This is up and beyond.

Nick Leng's LEMONS is more than just an album; emotive yet precise even in its idiosyncrasies: this powerful debut LP is a heady mix of throwback dream-pop, classically routed, singer-songwriter introspection, and beat-driven whimsy. Born of an emotional breakup, apartment fire and subsequent loss of a friend, the creation of this body of work is the result of personal odyssey through wistfulness, isolation, and ultimately a renewal of spirit. Such is the unique allure of LEMONS: It is emotionally literate, musically impulsive, and creatively unpredictable.
The South African born, Los Angeles-based artist’s debut full-length comes after two EPs, Tunnels and Planes and Drivers, which racked up millions of streams online and widespread support ranging from ID to Consequence of Sound to Vogue and Christian Dior.
