"you will not fuck up my day..."
On Catch Rabbit's gorgeous and nostalgic "The Future is Gay" I feel drawn back in time to the mid 80's and not in a cheeky over the top way but a tone that is pure. I mean you feel transported back and you would sweat transported to the UK new wave, jangle pop-esque places not to Seattle in 2022. It is a tonal quality that I have a soft spot for and the lead vox to me have a glittery art rock sensibility while the musical bed is absolutely a blend of broad pop and progressive pop rock, like Pavement or Television meets Roxy Music and the Pet Shop Boys all at once. Speaking of PSB, the lead vox made me think (off the top of my head) of an amalgam of artful singers like Neil Francis Tennant (Pet Shop Boys), Jonny Pierce (The Drums), Andy Bell (Erasure) or thereabouts.
Press notes indicate that:
[This song is loosely about a multidimensional being entering our universe to wage gay wrath upon our reality and turn everyone gay. It’s a tongue-in-cheek jab at the pearl clutchers who think that our existence is an attack on their values, it’s a call to arms for being who you are, and it’s a mantra to forget about the judgment of naysayers]
I love that, I love pissing off haters and sometimes it feels like our society is going backwards. Sometimes it almost feels like we were farther along in the mid-80's even though I do remember being hatefully called a faggot as I walked down my conservative town wearing a white and red striped button down, tight black pants and two toned Beatle boots. Whatever.
"The Future is Gay" does what it sets out to do and more. The official Video is smile inducing. Since moving past the post grunge days when no one dressed to entertain I am hoping that the musical future whether gay, bi, pan is one where musical artists dress for work.
