"don't call that fate man, you can call that karma...."
"Soothsayer" by Edinburgh, Scotland's Dubinski plays like a horror movie as imagined by Stephen King and David Cronenberg over drinks. But it doesn't necessarily sound dark. It feels like lively progressively drawn heavy jangle pop / post punkian indie rock and for whatever reason I thought of a smashing together of The Clash, Space and Television. Lead singer, guitarist Eugene Gaine wrote this slithery tale while sleep deprived from working night shifts. Soothsayer tells the story of someone who repeatedly visits a torturous fortune teller, one who predicts only horrific events for the clearly masochistic customer to expect in the future.
The banging keys while guitar shapes move in interesting ways and Gaine spouting lyrics about horrible deconstructing of one's body, of aches that feel like "daggers down to your bone", parasites under the skin, mind going rotten like pudding left out in the summer sun. I have the feeling that while this is all sadistic fun, the track make you think about how we have all stepped in emotional quicksand. We all do masochistic things from time to time at our own peril when we don't give a shit about ourselves. We do let our body go to waste or sludge away at a meaningless job that literally sucks the life out of us. Dig this track and dig Gaine's vocal aesthetic and the interwoven jammy nature of Dubinski in general.

Named as “one of the best live acts around at the moment” by Jim Gellatly, Dubinski is an indie rock outfit hailing from Edinburgh, Scotland. Consisting of four brothers: Eugene, Fergus, Donal and Eoin Gaine. Originally from Yorkshire, they moved to the Highlands early in their childhood, where the atmospheric isolation and shared love of music pushed the four brothers to start playing together. After moving to Edinburgh to study, they took their music from the bedroom to the studio, releasing a series of critically acclaimed EPs under the moniker Ded Rabbit; ‘Wash Away’, ‘Wake Up In A Dream’ and ‘Moving In Slow Motion’. The band firmly made a name for themselves on the Scottish music scene, thanks to their fast-phased alt-rock and visceral live sets, and have seen praises from the likes of BBC Radio Scotland, Scotland On Sunday and Record Of The Day, among others - before gaining a nomination for best newcomers at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards and performing on some of the biggest stages in the country and in the UK including T in the Park, Wide Days and Liverpool Sound City. About their moniker they say; “as kids, after we booked our first show, our mother answered a call from a local journalist who asked what our band was called. She quickly responded ‘Ded Rabbit’ and hung up the phone. The name just sort of stuck”. When their mother sadly passed away, the brothers took a pause to reflect upon finishing their debut LP, recorded at RAK Studios in London with Grammy Award winning producers/engineers Mike Horner (Yonaca, Franz Ferdinand, Hot Chip) and Robbie Nelson (Beck, Jarvis Cocker, Rolling Stones). With their new album now in hand, the brothers are not just raising their musical bar, but paying tribute to their late mother, Eugenia Dubinski, as they’ve taken on her maiden name by renaming themselves Dubinski.
