"I won’t think you’re a monster for messing with my head..."
17 year old Los Angeles based KALI is back with an avant pop sort of art rock-ish affair called "Insomnia" and (go with me on this) but within the sideways psychedelia and electronic / organic orchestrations I hear or, maybe, more to the point, feel a tinge of T-Rex glam at the center of this all. Not the boogie woogie punk burlesque thing but something in the vibe and glittery lead guitar strains and broad theatricality. I swear.
Anyway, KALI's askew vision along with it's beauty and daring is vastly more interesting than someone getting a drivers license and then whining about how some boy broke her heart. "Insomnia" might basically be about heartbreak but it certainly doesn't seem whiney, it seems more empowered like a mini-Fiona Apple (or something like that). KALI's passion and self awareness seems so much more declarative.
The Official Video involving KALI and a mollusk (I think) is delightfully odd and somehow the cyclical nature of it all is sort of meditative. New EP "Maltman and Effie" coming this summer.

17-year-old artist KALI, full name Kali Flanagan, opens up the year by announcing that her debut EP CIRCLES is out May 7th. The project includes her previously released single "Back To The Start" as well as the new track "Lucy," releasing today. The new song builds upon the lush and intuitive songwriting that encapsulate the aforementioned "Back To The Start," with the new song turning its eyes towards a burgeoning love story. The video, directed by Zealand Yancy and Sophia Ziskin who also directed KALI's first visual, captures this sentiment perfectly as it documents the beginnings of KALI and Lucy's romance.
For KALI, who was named an artist to watch in 2021 by NYLON, music is a foundation. At an early age, her parents acknowledged her musical inclinations, putting her in piano lessons at the age of four. Her heart had been set on the guitar, which she now plays as well as bass, keyboard, drums and violin, but agrees that piano lessons were a fit place to start: “It was a great idea because it’s the center and the foundation of everything theory-wise.”
A prodigy of sorts, KALI grew up playing recitals and covering Beatles songs, taking private lessons with music teachers and going to after school music programs, and even taking songwriting masterclasses to nourish her passion. In 2017, KALI assembled her first band, Big Wednesday. Intuitive and eager, she taught herself how to use Garageband and began writing and demoing songs that she would later teach her bandmates for their shows. Their relatable and honest indie-surf arrangements drew sweaty, teenage crowds to local venues like The Smell and The Viper Room and would lead her to her now solo work as KALI, whose debut project is coming soon.
