"life's small like pieces on the ground, they're just memories, they're just memories..."
I don't know about you, but dreaming, contemplating, swimming in pools of existential dread or the utter miracle of life, those experiences feels much better with a deep groove behind it. "Just Memories" by singer-songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist (and one half of The Emmy award winning duo The Bergamot) Nathaniel Paul has that deep groove and a lot more. The electric guitar notes sustained with beautiful hints of vibrato, the airy picking, the synthetic ambient imagery, the lounge punk jazz dipped shapes and Nathaniel's easy vocal aesthetic bathed, in what might be described as a psychedelic or hallucinogenic haze (and carried with lovely layered harmonies) feel beautifully surreal. There is an illusory sense of this track not being real but existing in that sensitive space between the dream state and waking up.
Listen to "Just Memories" more than once, which you will find to feel good and natural (it is perfect for a lengthy loop listen) and you will hear new things each and every time including the nuances of Nathaniel's vocal aesthetic. AND coming back to the beginning, it is the bass push and those cool persuasive drums with the high hat cues that inject this track with the groove and funk. I absolutely love how up front it is in the mix. It is a testament to Nathaniel's production head to make it a focal point that everything else holds onto.
The artists says that "'Just Memories' is about making the future the best it can be - given the challenges we face as a world."
Nathaniel Paul’s sophomore album “Turpentine” will be released in early Summer 2022 via AWAL and I look forward to a deep listen from start to finish, from top to bottom.
