The After Hours and the growing diorama of "Me & My Girl"

 

"it's getting late at night I wonder if you're coming by to talk about it all..."

"Me & My Girl" opens up like a playful mystery. The sounds to me, feel sort of 50's noir, at least, at first. Maybe it is the stand up bass sounds, the belly faraway piano keys and the musical breakdowns and lyrics that mention ghosts. Moments later as the plucking rhythms, a vocal harmonious ramping up cadence and big sort of Depeche Mode-esque piano / synth iterations things feel more broadly theatrical, 80's dramatic like baroque pop on high. The swelling drama is gorgeous and smile inducing. 

It is as if the vocal patter lyrically draws on the same themes all the way through but the tensions and emotional power floods in from a 5 to 500 throughout trajectory of the song. I hope that makes sense because sometimes I do not. I do dig the artful nature here. I, in fact, thought a bit about Tori Amos and even the queen, Kate Bush herself as I listened to Jordan Trevino's, Sean Saman's and Elena Rossetto's artful aesthetic.
