"and I let you show all the wonders you are hiding..."
The transporting "Astray" (to other worlds or emotional states) by Raleigh, North Carolina's State of the Secretary, the avant alternative / indie rock solo music project of multi-instrumentalist Issaac Anderson, is vastly interesting in the way it pushes buttons in your brain. There are sounds like something between a vintage French or German street organ to an accordion played cleanly and then maybe the same instrument modified / electrified with distortion boxes. There are feverish bouts of percussion that provide warbled echo slapped urgency and there is Isaac's vocal aesthetic sung threw what might be a pencil mic and a tiny speaker. It all sounds interestingly vague and impassioned but like someone caught in a time traveling mirage. A story or image oddly translucent.
This is not State of the Secretary's signature sound. Other tracks ("All About" comes to mind) might feel more folk turned indie rock that is more akin to R.E.M. (or such) with cleanly wrought vocals and then, again, a track like "Terminal Ray" has a musical cloth cut between heavy alt rock and light and airy indie rock. Other songs like "Toxic" might have touches of Heartland rock and even 70's esque pop rock tones. As State of the Secretary, Isaac is a mixed bag of artistic motifs like one of those mysterious traveling vagabonds in the back story of a Stephen King novel.
Really digging the surreal edges of "Astray" those edges are intensified on the Official Video that feels so captivatingly filmic as written, directed and produced by Griffin Davis @griffinhartdavis.

Described like "If 'The Smiths' and 'The Cure' played music now, and took lots of influence from the 90s", State of The Secretary drives home indie rock with a jangly tone. Being the solo project of multi instrumentalist, Isaac Anderson, State of The Secretary combines pounding drums, airy pianos, and honest lyricism into analog fueled indie rock melodies.
