"story-telling songwriter, producer, & sonic alchemist..."
Mike Casey's may be a musical magician. He is also a guy who doesn't hold his musical creations so close to the vest as to feel utterly inward but instead loves to bounce sonic textures off others and let them do the same with him. He's collaborated with GRAMMY/Emmy nominated artists as diverse as Nat Reeves, Benito Gonzalez, Brandee Younger, Zaccai Curtis, Justin Faulkner, Marc Cary, Apple Juice Kid and some of his generation's finest like Julius Rodriguez, Andrew Renfroe, Taber Gable, & Alex Claffy.
I am, by no means, well versed in jazz but find the remix of Casey's "Breathe In" adroitly interesting. The fluid percussion that feels incredibly hip hop-esque, the soul pop embellishments and the R and B flavored jazz dips taste good. I have listened to this track a dozen times and like a vibey sonic hallucinogen, Casey's narratives seem to tell a different story each and every time. The saxophone shapes push envelopes while the divergent keys, courtesy of collaborator Blori (aka Pablo Rizo Piera) flutter into dissonant places. It is all a glorious, jammy affair.
