"you always see right through me..."
Expanding to a five piece outfit last year, Oxford, UK based Self Help churn out such a vibrant, choppy, explosive bit of post punkery on "Bamboo" and amid the divergent shapes, like the kind of rockabilly-esque rhythms there are a lot of harder edges and side ways eruptions. In fact, in terms of frenetic, kinetic post punk energy I feel a kind of amalgam of artists like Bloc Party and old school Gang of Four.
I am super digging the strident vocal aesthetic of lead singer Danny Jeffries too. He has an artful bite and is able to shape his vox to suit the emotional texture of this track. Self Help boasts more than just one lead singer and I like that as well. Press notey stuff indicate : Self Help are having a break from shows to track their first full studio album due to be released next year.
Cool.

Oxford’s raucous party starlets Self Help release their latest single Bamboo on July 8th, the second of two singles recorded at Upcycled Sounds. The kings of Oxford’s post-punk scene, Bamboo reign in their infamous noise/punk pop just a little - leaning towards a country style two-step but still overlayed with filthy guitars and saw leads.
Bamboo has its roots in the sleazy punk/disco scene but also delights in its potential psychedelic trippiness.
Singer Danny Jeffries’s distinctive twangy yet conversational vocals give the whole piece its focus. The power of the two step beat rising and falling with the anger of a partner knowing them too well, and the angry indifference if they were to end the relationship.
Evolving into a 5 piece line-up last year and with infamously electrifying performances and three vocalists who are all front-men in their own right, Self Help are having a break from shows to track their first full studio album due to be released next year.
Self Help started in 2016 and since then they have toured up and down the country and in Europe. Their songs have been played on Radio 6, Radio 1, BBC Radio Oxford and many more.
